Today was another long day.
Got up super early to go to the Alps.
We went to Grindelwald, a small little town right under the Eiger, Moench, and Jungfrau (the three famous Alps). It poured rain the entire day, but it was still incredible and magnificent.
First, a little about our trip there….it didn’t exactly go according to plan.
So, my family has Eurail passes, which they had been told would get them anywhere in Europe. So we went to buy a ticket for me. It said it would be 300 francs. YIKES. A lot of the time, there are specials, so I went back and found an all day, all zones Switzerland pass for 60 francs and bought it. Should have known it was too good to be true. On the train to Bern, the conductor checking my ticket said it wasn’t the right ticket. So, I had to buy a 230 franc ticket from the train. So frustrating! The conductor was super nice and gave me the money back for the wrong ticket I bought, and even gave us coupon things for the food on the train. Still, I was quite frustrated by it. Then, we got on the last train to Grindelwald. It was a tiny, rickety looking thing. The conductor comes around to check our tickets. Apparently that train was run by a private company, so my family’s Eurail passes wouldn’t work. So then they had to buy tickets for that train! GAH.
FYI for those of you considering Switzerland- it is CRAZY expensive here. Our lunches in a tiny diner cost 72 francs!!
So we took a cable car up to the top of the First mountain. It was amazing:
When we got to the very top, there were tons of bands dressed in traditional attire playing. Apparently they get together there only once a year, which was today! It was really neat to see!
(I promise that is the Eiger back there!)
We saw the pretty town church with the most amazing graveyard:
On the way back to the train station, we saw this:
Of course, as soon as we got to the train station on the way back, it stopped raining and the sun came out! ha
Rode the train back to Zurich. Ate dinner in the hotel, where we had the sweetest waitress. 🙂
